DPI monitor issue question ?

What DPI does it report (xdpyinfo|grep dots) and what do you think it
should report?

1440x900 pixels in 303mm x 190mm is 120 dpi.  That's correct for a 14.1"
monitor.

By the way, in GNOME you can set the DPI used for rendering fonts
separately from the DPI that the server reports, so you might want to
check gnome-font-properties.
