Depends how you define free.

More to the point

- X is a protocol definition not a program

People seem to be talking at cross purposes because nobody has said
'server' or 'libraries'. GPL X libraries would be very very questionable.
A GPL X server would really only hurt one chipset vendor who seems to
have a problem playing nice (assuming they didn't just ignore the licence)
