You know there's a Xft library specifically designed to make using
freetype in Xlib applications simpler right?

Of course, few people use it directly, since to really handle text
you need higher level layout engines such as Pango, and the support
that toolkits provide to handle input & display of characters from
different languages with complex requirements, not to mention support
for different types of input device (mobile devices, accessibility
helpers for people who are physically unable to use mice/keyboards,
etc.)
