GTK and Xserver double-buffering

Hi all,

I am trying to understand the differences between an X server with and
without Damage/Composite. As I understand it Composite double-buffers
all pixmaps off-screen to avoid flickering when moving/resizing windows.
In GTK 2.0 and further the GTK library itself also performs
double-buffering of a window. This was needed with an X server without
D/C, this was indeed flickering when moving/resizing, but maybe not in
one with these extensions. Is this stilll needed in a server with
Damage/Composite? This looks like a lot of memory is being wasted.

Best regards,
Leen Toelen
