I'd just like to point out that we're not looking at a zero sum game in this
situation. The resources employed for the two publications may well be quite
different. Off the top of my head, the best example of this is in our
contributor base: while we welcome contributions from all the usual LG
suspects, we also want to reach outside the community to those who don't
normally speak up on list or even know such a community exists. There are
loads of practicing designers and artists out there using Libre Graphics
software, standards and methods, but we haven't been harnessing them
effectively. I, for one, have a list of people I've met in the last few
years who are professional users but not otherwise engaged in the community.
We'll be trying, in a big way, to bring in people like that. So I don't
think it's a big strain on our communal resources for you to do a sprint
publication on location in September and for us to come out with something
in November.

Short term publications are a good thing, because they give you the
opportunity (as you've so often mentioned) to show off the tools and what
they can do in public, to a wider audience than normally gets to see the
production process. That's great.

For our part, we're focusing on regularity, consistency, marketability and
expansion. That means having things like having an editorial structure, an
advisory board, some predictable distribution channels, reasonably
consistent funding and even an ISSN. So it strikes me that we're talking
about two very different types of publication.

Heck, I don't even see the problem with using the same name. In library
science, there's a tried and true solution to that problem: if two
periodicals have the same name, they're differentiated in catalogues by
their publishing cities. So if it ever does come down to a case of differing
culture and lack of agreement (instead of calling editions created at events
special issues outside of the normal style and numbering conventions), it's
no problem for yours to be Libre Graphics Magazine (Zurich) and for ours to
be something else. But of course, the terms "yours" and "ours" are
unnecessarily divisive.

Essentially, I think there's definitely room, if there needs to be, for two
publications and that nothing we're planning should stop you from carrying
out your plan.
