By the way, I've rebuilt everything by hand (expat, dbus 1.4.14 and Qt 4.7.2) and it now works!

I have no clue. Somewhere between the data on the wire and your printing of the data.

It could be in dbus code, it could be in QtDBus code or it could be in your application.
