Ok, this is a bug with your distro or alsa then - there really should be a
'default' ALSA device. Please file a bug with ubuntu (and do mention this bug
to make sure they're not forwarding it back to us again).

You might be able to work around by running this from a command line:

 $ gconftool-2 --type string --set
/system/gstreamer/0.10/default/musicaudiosink 'alsasink device=front'

If this doesn't work you can reset it again with:

 $ gconftool-2 --type string --set
/system/gstreamer/0.10/default/musicaudiosink 'autoaudiosink'

or by using gnome-sound-properties.
