The default for period-size is 8192. Using 4096 or below works on my
soundcard. This is the i810 sound card on my laptop - crappy sound, but
there's a lot of them out there. 

I'll wait for your ALSA changes to hit CVS and take a look at whether the 
plugin could figure out my sound card automatically.
