Problem launching hald

I've just installed gentoo on my laptop. I can't get hald (ebuild version 
0.5.7.1-r2) up and running on my system.

Running "hald --verbose=yes --use-syslog --daemon=yes" results in hald 
outputting 100s of lines to the syslog and hald terminates with a return 
status of 1. Here're the last few lines from the syslog:
