Jan-Peter,

indeed PostScript level 3 and PDF do provide methods (CIE-based color
spaces, CalRGB, etc.) to support that, i.e. to embed descriptions of source
color spaces (even separate ones for each printed object) direcly in the
PDL.

However, at the interface GhostScript->device driver, GS always sends
*device colors* to the driver (in the color space corresponding to the
driver's ProcessColorModel). Any other color spaces which did appear in the
PDL document *are already converted* (by GS) to the driver's device color
space at this point - the original document colors (in the document color
space(s)) are no longer visible to the driver, in the general case.

Regards,
Gerhard
