Well... Xinerama might be deprecated, but it's definitely not obsolete.

I've just re-checked with the latest updated OS X 10.6.2, and the shipping X11 still only supports client API use of Xinerama and not XRandR. Therefore nothing has come along to actually obsolete it there.

Oh, and I too am only looking at this from the viewpoint of client applications. I'm not sure what is *really* going on behind the scenes with Apple's X11, but to a client app they get decently implemented multi-monitor reporting that is supported not only by Linux GTK, but also Linux Java. Hitting other boxes and having remote X work is quite nice.

Now, given that OS X is arguably the top desktop UNIX out there, combined with the overlap of graphics professionals using Macs, I think it's best not to dismiss them out of hand. They also have been working to improve the X11 experience over the years including shipping it by default, implementing strong extended input support, etc.

So if a standard comes out that requires the client apps use XRandR, a lot of users will be blocked from using it. And that includes this developer while he's doing Linux development.
