Can you please restore the original code ? I guess the current version
in the "XORG-RELEASE-1"-branch will likely result in a horrible
disaster.

The argument that a semi-private API is being used isn't that worse in
this case since Xfree86 codebase and other applications make use of that
API, too. If FreeType.org decides to change that all hell will break
loose anyway.
If anybody still has problems with that we can link the matching
FreeType code statically.
