Just out of curiosity, what kind of "sandbox" is this? I mean, it
appears a bit strange to me to do sandboxing by running things as
root. Is that a simple chroot?

Well, I am not the only one who can write code. A patch is often a very
convincing argument if the upstream folks don't fulfill your wishes
right-away...
