we'd still need/want a d-bus interface for getting things from knotify to
visualizations such as the plasma system tray.

the nice thing about having part standardized is that the visualization is one
thing people really seem to want to mess with.

as a concrete example of why this is good: with a Well Known dbus interface
for triggering visual notifications, Canonical is able to make their own
visualizations without altering knotify, plasma or any other bits of KDE. it
allows them to simply add their mojo as they see fit without having to make
life annoying for upstream KDE.

it also allows them to write their visualization thing once and use it with
all desktops that support this mechanism.

so i do see value having a visual notifications d-bus spec. it's a lot more
niche than what knotify does and a far simpler topic, but it's useful anyways
so we may as well get it done. :)

_that_ said ... i think it would be awesome to document and specify the
knotify system and offer it for wide spread adoption. it would allow us to
configure notifications in one place, allow the desktop session to decide just
what that means exactly and lift a lot of apps out of the stone age when it
comes to notifications. but that should probably be done in a separate thread
and a separate spec document so that we don't get all confused :)

agreed ...

in this thread, at least, yes ...
