[Clipart] BETA OCAL: External sources/trackbacks visual concept and ideas

 Hi all

For the Beta site, I have an idea for using trackbacks as a more
comprehensive "External Sources."
Please refer to the attached visual concept and continue reading.

Idea Summary: Use Trackbacks as an External Sources form/data/information.

I suggest we change the way we do external sourced clipart from the
old OCALsite to this idea. John raised some valid points earlier about
attribution
and the uploader taking credit for clipart they didn't create. My own
personal experiences on the old OCAL site has shown a hole in the
information used, gathered, or displayed for external sources. Perhaps this
information is used in the old OCAL metadata, but I don't see it anywhere on
the old site. The missing information is the location of the external
source. There are quite a number of cliparts that have external source tags,
but don't show where they come from. John and Papapishu have been great in
putting a link to the external source in the description, but most other
uploaders don't bother, and only add the externalsource tag. You also need
to know a little of HTML to be able to make a good link in the description,
which might scare a few people off doing it properly.

Suggested procedure for external sourced clipart: Upload the clipart as a
normal one, via the Upload page. After it's uploaded, use the
Trackback/External Sources Javascript found underneath the clipart in the
gallery view, to generate the external sources info.

Trackbacks/External Sources on the BETA OCAL are fairly easy to use for the
Joe Public User. It's a click and copy'n'paste, found in the Javascript
clipart properties button underneath any clipart thumbnail. The word "
Trackback" in any place could be changed to External Source, since that is
what they are. On the External Sources page of a clipart, the only important
info (I believe) is the locations where it is found - the rest is optional
or informative only. I think this idea would go really well with
WikipediaCommons
cliparts, and other clipart collection sites.

Clipart Details page should have a link to the clipart External Sources
page, and links to the places where it is found.

Clipart External Sources page should list all "trackbacks" that have been
created for that clipart. Additional data I would ask for, but is not
necessary is the person's name who found the external source. It could just
as easily be left off the listings. The clipart name next to the External
Sources title should link back to the Clipart Details page.

Any feedback or criticism of the idea welcome. The other thing I'd ask for
is an indication from the technical guys, how easy this would be to
implement.
