[Authentication] KDE vs. Gnome vs. Firefox password management applications

Currently the KDE password management application does not work with
Firefox. The Gnome application may or may not, I don't know. There is
a bug open on the Mozilla bugtracker regarding the issue:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=278343

In that bug it was implied that the good folks at this list are
working on a common standard for saving passwords, and that this
standard may pave the way for integration between these three tools.
Is this work ongoing? Is it stalled? What does it need to proceed?
