[avahi] avahi 0.6-14 in suse 10.2 doesn't attempt to join multicast

I'm just using the default config with suse 10.2  avahi-daemon  
doesn't even attempt to
joint the multicast.

Using --debug doesn't seem to give any hints.  strace doesn't show an  
attempt to join the mdns multicast address either.
