I don't think we want to have them automatically assigned.  Often new
bugs are mis-categorized, so it's useful to have them unassigned by
default, so someone can review them and assign them to the right
person.  Plus, based on my experience in Inkscape, often the person that
fixes the bug is not always the lead maintainer of the area, and if the
bugs are marked 'unassigned', then that's a clear indication that
someone else can grab it.  Once it's assigned to someone, that suggests
"hands off, this one's mine".

*Nod*  Certainly looks inspired.  This is also my first time using
Mantis.  It was highly recommended by Scribus.  I'm hoping it works out,
because it looks easier to configure than Bugzilla and of higher
functionality than the SF tracker.
