It wont be to do with the config backend. It is a 100% gnome thing, so
in theory, if you disable compiz you should still get /something/ pop
up, but it wont look nearly as pretty :)

As to the reasons of why it's not showing up, it could be gstreamer
related but I'm not really sure. It's possibly a quandary for a gnome
list unless anyone here happens to know a quick answer.
