getting the user_data associated with an object path

Hi,

I modified the patch a bit as follows:

 - changed function name
 - added docs
 - added return_if_fail
 - changed signature to enable OOM detection
 - added some test coverage

I have not tried it though, I will try it and commit if it works after
john commits the make check fixes.
