This is something that other implementations (dbus-java, ndesk-dbus)
will need to be able to interoperate with, so please write it up in the
spec.

I suspect it'll also be easier for people to review if it's split up
into a specification of how it works, plus an implementation of that
spec, rather than people having to infer the spec from the implementation.
