I don't have a good understanding about the subject but AFAIK the real
problem is how to couple the ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) and the
keyboard/screen backlight. This is how it works on Mac OS, e.g. screen
and keyboard backlight are adjusted in terms of the ambience light
intensity.
