I'm running my i830M on latest kernels (well 3.10 or so) and things
still work. Generally the kernel will keep the ABI stable for
essentially forever, so upgrading should work without upgrading any
piece in userspace at all. Worst case you need to downgrade to the old
kernel again ;-)
