2.2.92 had issues with FreeType header syntax; that's been fixed in 2.2.93
which is available at

http://freedesktop.org/~fontconfig/release

Checking bits out from CVS requires quite recent versions of the 
autotools, including automake.  You should be able to get things to build 
with the included 'autogen.sh' script if you have recent enough versions 
of automake, libtool and autoconf.  The tarballs have generated versions 
of the configure script which obviates the need for running autogen.sh
