[Fontconfig] sub-pixel hinting turned on when started using DVI cavle to monitor

I don't like sub-pixel hinting much. Maybe here someone could help with this, 
I've been asking for help on the comp.windows.x.kde newsgroup, since I 
thought the hinting was KDE's choosing at first

I found this in /etc/fonts/local.conf:

So the bit that (AFAIK) should enable sub-pixel rendering is commented out!
Not sure what to do now. The annoying colours around all my fonts is enough
to make a guy switch to GNOME!

I don't think this is a system files problem (I might be wrong) because if
it were I'd have the same behavoir in GNOME, since they use the same libs
to draw the fonts.

This is getting to be rather frustrating. Just because someone starts using
a DVI-D connector the computer shouldn't automatically switch without
telling them!
