I usually see that message when trying to use too old of
a version of FreeType.  I know 2.1.4 is new enough, and 2.1.2
is too old - not sure which side 2.1.3 falls on.  (And 2.1.5
and later are problematic since they changed their headers
incompatibily and broke the ability to build FontConfig 2.2.1.)
