[Fontconfig] Link Problem

Hello to the list.

I'm trying to build GTK on my RH9 system and thus am building all of its
dependencies as well. One of these is obviously, fontconfig. While running
make, I get an error while in the fc-cache directory with an "undefined
reference
to 'FT_Load_Sfnt_Table'" (which appears to be called from fcfreetype.c in
the
src directory).

Any ideas on what I can do to resolve this?

I'm using gcc 3.2.2 and running as a non-superuser.
