I'm definitely using the fontconfig branch on this computer with 
gnome-terminal and firefox, which both work.  (Also thunderbird). 
However, gnome-font-properties currently doesn't work for me -- it 
reports no fonts found -- so I'll look into that.  (I thought that my 
patch got it working last night).
