[Fontconfig] How to block glyph fallback in a QT application?

What kind of mess are you seeing --

* empty squares showing (= no glyph fallback)
* proper characters showing but from the wrong font (= glyph fallback)

I'm asking because not too long ago someone on this list stated that they
hadn't even got it to work in Qt...
