could the RSS feed not just be one possible format that GHNS could send back
in response to requests? RSS is, IMHO, pretty underpowered for the majority
of the applications GHNS would see. while the current GHNS in KDE3 is a
slightly glorified RSS in a sense, even it has a lot more useful information
and is more appropriate for the problems GHNS is meant to address.
so i'm not sure if KNewStuff would need to support RSS (i wonder what that
would do to the API, actually, when juxtaposed with the more robust GHNS
service?) as long as GHNS would also make available the XML data stream.
i suppose an upside to supporting RSS in KNewStuff is that it would enable KDE
apps to use RSS feeds via KNewStuff; just not so sure how useful that is
versus the impact on KNewStuff?

IIRC it's already there in the backgrounds control panel in GNOME.
