I was under the impression that this is not guaranteed, but maybe that problem
only exists with read(). I've seen the fread man page, but I'm not sure how
much I want to trust it, as I distinctly remember having seen/heard of this
problem with plain fread() as well (ie. I remember the argument swap to ensure
all-or-nothing reads).
