It took me a bit of thinking about the API to get an idea of what it's supposed
to do. I'm still not quite sure though.

Could you explain what you want the API to be used for and give a small
pseudo-code example with your proposed API?

Because I have some other ideas on how to do something like that, but I'm not
sure they fit your use case.
