My proposal would not break anything for existing applications.

We would leave in place the existing enums for backwards compatibility.

I think "signal-type" is an awful name (from an end-user point of view), and
while I agree that it's generally a good idea to keep things in sync with the
codec API where possible, I'm not convinced this is one of those times.
