Right, so very much pointing to a start/stop race then.

I don't think the extra GST_REFCOUNTING level is going to help much then
without context of other debug categories.  We are going to to have to look at
other categories.  Try with gl*:7,basetransform:5.  At this point it's very
much a guess and check game trying to find a category that will reproduce the
race easily enough that also provides enough information to be able to find the
cause.
