We're pleased to announce the availability of version 0.2.1 (dubbed
"Return of the Sedi Master") of the GStreamer streaming-media framework.

This is the first release that is written on top of GObject, with a twist.
The default compilation mode still uses gtk+-1.2, and uses a shim to build
all the GObject structures on top of GtkObject instead. This leaves
significant backwards compatibility for people who do not wish to install
the glib-2.0 package just yet. Since glib-2.0 will not be common on most
machines until after GNOME-2.0 is out and commonly deployed, we felt we
could not force people to into a glib-2.0 development environment just to
use GStreamer.

Another feature of this release is a significant start at cleaning up
configure.base (which is the source for .in and .ac, to deal with
different versions of autoconf), which unfortunately includes some hackery
to work around things that are currently being added to automake CVS HEAD
by one our developers.

There are also some new plugins, as usual:

  * flac: Lossless audio compression and decompression.
  * festival: Initial attempt at a text-to-speech element.
  * deinterlace: Video deinterlacer.
  * UDP source/sink: Data transport plugin over UDP.
  * chart: converts audio into video.

However, please remember the fact that GStreamer is not a product for end
users, it's for developers who which to write applications that have
better media handling support. If the player crashes, don't be surprised,
we probably already know why. If your new GStreamer-based application
crashes, we want to know about it and help you fix the problem.

Updates, Enhancements:

  * Based on GObject, with GtkObject shim
  * #ifdef's around major subsystems for compile-time slimming:
       + XML pipeline load/save
       + Autoplugging
       + Commandline parsing
       + Event tracing
  * The avi decoder now depends on CVS avifile 0.6.0
  * Updates to the quicktime decoder.

New plugins:

  * flac
  * festival
  * deinterlace
  * udpsrc/udpsink
  * chart

More details on these features can be found, along with the release
tarballs and some RPMs, on the project's website:

http://gstreamer.net/ or the Status table at
http://gstreamer.net/gstreamerstatus.html

GStreamer is hosted on SourceForge, so support requests and bugs may
be filed as usual. Interested developers of the core library, plugins,
and applications should subscribe to the gstreamer-devel list. If
there is sufficient interest we will create more lists as necessary.
