I've seen video editing software do it in nearly realtime (you "load"
the mpeg and the thumbnails start appearing) on a P3 1GHz. Except when
the mpeg is on a networked drive: then you can see it accesses a lot of
data in the file before displaying its thumbnails.
That was on a 30mn SVCD mpeg IIRC.
