Tip: the "cvsu" script from cvsutils could help you in this kind of
situation. http://www.red-bean.com/cvsutils/ or the cvsutils package in
Debian.

It allows you to do various CVS things offline (or when the server's
dead), including telling you which files have been touched since
checkout / update.

Being on a dialup these days I find it immensely useful.
