Hi,

gst-register by itself doesn't do anything to the device at all.  It
doesn't even try to open it.  So unless there's something funky in your
setup, I'd think it's very unlikely that gst-register caused this
problem.

Getting the error that the device is not found is unrelated to having
the device file in /dev.

Most systems still have all /dev files created explicitly, even if you
don't have the device.  Make sure that your videodev and bttv modules
are loaded before starting xawtv or tvtime.
