I don't know if this is the right way to fix it, since it means that
applications have to assume that they need to put spider in front of any bin
that gst-gconf constructs for them in order to play audio. 

I'm inclined to think that I should change the esdsink to be 'audioconvert !
audioscale ! esdsink' so that it handles a sensible set of audio formats
automatically.

What does everyone else think?

gstreamer-properties now uses gst-gconf to get and set the keys. It doesn't
try and handle parallel installs of gstreamer. I'm not sure how big a flaw
that is.
