Fwiw, users indeed lived with it when rhythmbox wasn't releasing the
audio device, but that was regularly generating "I want a stop button 
to release the device" requests. If it stops working now, you won't be
able to say "yeah, gstreamer can't do it", but instead users will ask
why it stopped working. A "Yeah, it's a problem with GStreamer, please
wait another 6 months and it should be fixed". In the Rhythmbox case, my
answer will probably be "Yeah, GStreamer can't do that, switch to the
xine backend to get the old behaviour back".
I understand that there are features that you want to support cleanly in
the core, but removing random features between two major releases should
be avoided at all costs, especially when this is a feature used by most
of the apps that currently are using GStreamer.
