Hi folks,
as you might know, KDE is again discussing what multimedia framework to
use for KDE4. GStreamer is a candidate, both on its own merits I
presume, as well as thanks to the work of some KDE developers like Tim
Janssen and Scott Wheeler. Also, there are other frameworks being
considered, and NMM seems to be a very likely choice as well.
Especially given that its C++, it would seem on first glance a more
natural fit for KDE.
On the other hand, GStreamer has evolved and matured again in this
cycle, and people who were once vary much opposed to the idea of
GStreamer in KDE have mellowed and just want to choose a good framework.
So, if we want to be a choice for KDE as well, the race is on. Let's
first decide if this is really what we want, having learned what we have
from the GNOME integration. Let's not forget we have slightly less
developers who know C++ well.
My personal suggestion is we aim for inclusion in KDE (of course :)),
and focus this round of development work on architectural improvements
that have clear benefit to end-user applications.
To show that KDE is getting serious about deciding, here's the
announcement of a cvs commit of a new KDE music player, amaroK:

Today's a good day to discuss stuff :)
