A few notes here -- and I just said some of this to Thomas on IRC.

First, yes, amarok is a new player that is gaining some popularity in the KDE
crowd; it kind of shoots at being a replacement for something XMMS / winamp
(as opposed to the RealOne / RhythmBox / iTunes / JuK "collection manager /
player thingies" of the world).

amarok had a GStreamer backend before the NMM one came around and it presently
works better than the NMM backend.

It's also of note that Mark -- the primary author -- (who I've put on CC here)
is usually in #gstreamer as Markey.

The motivation from the KDE side was that to honestly evaluate the plausible
options for multimedia frameworks that we need something to test them with.
Since amarok is kind of the new guy in the KDE MM crowd and still is still a
bit more experimental the authors took the initiative to make it the testbed.

I think most folks can probably see the logic in this. The framework issue
will obviously be a big choice for the future of KDE and it of course makes
sense to give everything that's currently out there a fair test drive. I've
said it before on a few lists -- if KDE chooses GStreamer for the media
backend for KDE 4.0 it will be because it's the best option available; the
same goes for anything else that we look at.

Cheers,

I mean, if 10 years from now, when you are doing something quick and dirty,
you suddenly visualize that I am looking over your shoulders and say to
yourself, "Dijkstra would not have liked this", well that would be enough
immortality for me.
