Not necessarily true - if you're logged into a SunRay server from a SunRay
thin client, then the login will set an environment variable (whose name I
can't recall but which is something like AUDIO_DEVICE) to a /tmp/.../blah
device node, which is a virtual device node that actually streams audio
across the LAN to your thin client so the noise appears at the right part of
the building.
