Not really. GStreamer serves in-process functionality, while sound
server is inter-process. So gst still needs sound server to output to if
you want to have software mixing (special case of sound-server like
function is alsa's dmix plugin). However, benefit of using gst is that
you can switch to sound server making precisely 0 changes to code of
application, just changing config. Also, sound server itself could very
well use GStreamer for its media processing.
