The hope is that she would pass on to her client the fact that they can ask their questions on this mailing list directly. I was hoping my questions would compel and instigate that scenario. There are plenty of folks on this list that would likely just answer the question(s) without charging a dime.

The fact that they haven't would seem to indicate a lack of understanding of the culture of the software they're using. If they have done that and not received satisfactory support or they have an urgent timeline that could be resolved via payment for an engineer's attention, then that would be worth knowing. There are commercial alternatives -- perhaps, e.g., approaching Collabora, Fluendo, or Entropy Wave and entering into a support or consulting contract.
