This works fine for me both with 1.x and the last 0.10 releases.

The matroska demuxer outputs UTF-8 text in form of 'pango markup'. You
need the textoverlay element from the 'pango' plugin in -base to overlay
this text (or plain UTF-8 text) on top of video.
