How does decodebin work?

How does an autoplug element like decodebin work? Suppose if I add my own
H264 decoder say mydec_h264dec which is better than avdec_h264, how does it
choose between avdec_h264 and mydec_h264dec? Where is the rank specified?
I'm quite new to this. I could not find this in docs
