Model of Caps Negotiation?

The one thing I have the most trouble with in gstreamer is getting a
dynamic pipeline to complete caps negotiation. I have often found that a
static pipeline will work without issue, but the same pipeline built
dynamically will fail to negotiate caps.

I would love to be able to build a pipeline in such a way that caps
negotiations complete but I find the gstreamer documentation fails to give
a model of exactly how elements in a pipeline go about negotiating caps.

I don't know what triggers renegotiation, what causes fixation, or any of
that. I've even read through the guidelines for building elements in the
hope that would answer my questions, but it hasn't.

If anyone has any information they can provide on this topic, I'd be
grateful!
