What's the correct usage of gst_element_query_duration() ??

I've found a workaround: gst_pad_query_position/duration works on decodebin2
src pads from the moment they're created.

However gst_element_query_position/duration always fails when the element is
not the pipeline - if someone could shine any light on this I'd be grateful.
