What is the different between gstreamer-1.0-x86-1.2.1-merge-modules.zip and gstreamer-1.0-x86-1.2.1.msi?

One is a zip archive and one is auto installer?

Another quesetion:

These two environment variables
GSTREAMER_1_0_ROOT_X86  and GSTREAMER_SDK_ROOT_X86

which one is need for gstreamer develop on windows? 
I downloaded gstreamer-1.0-devel-x86-1.2.1.msi and
gstreamer-1.0-x86-1.2.1.msi.
